VA2, Ep. 11 ES La Mariposa Atrapada en la Telaraña

Regresamos a Medellín, donde mi madre está a punto de cumplir sus 18 años de edad y de graduarse y está llena de aspiraciones en cuanto a su futuro. Sin embargo, como una mariposa atrapada en una telaraña, su situación familiar, su sociedad e incluso el momento histórico en que se hallaba en Medellín, a comienzos de la década del 60,  constituyen fibras que la amarran firmemente. Sin dejarse diezmar, ella persevera y encuentra maneras de manifestar su identidad y florecer. 

VA2, Ep. 11 The Butterfly Trapped in the Spiderweb

We return to Medellín, where my Mother is approaching her 18th birthday and is about to graduate and has many aspirations regarding her future. However, she is like a butterfly trapped in a spiderweb; her family situation, her society and even the historical moment within she is living in Medellin, in the early 60’s, weave a tight restrictive environment around her. She nevertheless, perseveres and finds ways to assert her identity and thrive.

Volvemos a Barranquilla, donde mi madre perdió la visión en el episodio anterior. En busca de ayuda, mi abuela Juana y mi madre, María del Pilar, emprenden una aventura hacia la Península Guajira, en el extremo Norte de Colombia, tierra de los Wayúu. Aprendemos acerca de la magia de los tejedores que viven en este paisaje único, y a través de la historia de la tejedora original, Wale’keru, la curandera le otorga a mi madre el don de una visión renovada.

We go back to Barranquilla, were my mother had lost her vision during the previous episode. Seeking for help, Grandmother Juana and Maria del Pilar undertake an adventure to la Península Guajira, in the northern tip of Colombia, land of the Wayúu. We learn about the magic of the weavers that live in this unique landscape, and through the story of the original weaver, Wale’Keru, the healer gifts my mother New Sight. 

VA2, Ep. 9 ES Líquida Quiero Ser; Cuidaremos de Nuestras Semillas Sagradas

Hoy me atrevo a preguntar: ¿Qué tal hemos cuidado nuestras semillas sagradas, las mujeres? Continúo compartiendo las historias de la vida de mi Madre. Después de un año largo de trabajo y recuperación, tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a la Costa Atlántica de Colombia, donde pudo vivir el Carnaval de Barranquilla y la naturaleza intensamente festiva de quienes viven al lado del mar. Allí también encontró otra complicación, tuvo un accidente en el agua y según ella describía, se volvió líquida y se entregó a la situación, tal como la Victoria Amazónica que se somete al agua para volverse semilla, su espíritu absorbió esta experiencia y permaneció por siempre con ella, y a través de sus historias, conmigo, y ahora yo las comparto contigo, en forma de poesía. 
 

VA2, Ep. 9 Liquid Be Me; Tending to Our Sacred Seeds

Today I dare ask: How have we tended our sacred seeds, women? I continue to unravel my mother’s life stories. After a long year of work and recovery, she had the opportunity to travel to the Atlantic Coast of Colombia, where she got to experience Carnival and the intensely festive nature of the people who live right by ocean. There, she also found another complication. She had an accident that involved water and as she described it, she became liquid and surrendered to her situation, and like the Victoria Amazonica that surrenders to the water to become seed, her spirit absorbed this experience and it forever stayed with her, and through her stories, with me, and now I share it with you, within poetry.

Después de sobrevivir la tormenta de nieve y el frío apocalíptico en Texas, comparto mi encuentro con un halcón y pregunto con él, Embajador de la Vida y la Muerte, ¿Qué has hecho con mi cielo? Y precisamente porque la vida es un espiral sagrado, regreso a la historia de mi Madre en Medellín, a narrarte la historia de su segundo encuentro con la muerte.

Fresh from surviving FreezAgeddon in Texas, the unforgettable Valentines Week of 2021, I share my encounter with a Cooper’s Hawk and ask, along with him, the Ambassador of Life, and Death: What Have You Done to My Sky? And precisely because life is a spiral, we return to my Mother’s life in Medellín, where, at 16, she has her second encounter with death.
